Assistant Section Traffic Manager (ASTM) - Position Description
Requirements:
- Familiarity with traffic handling across all modes.
- Technician class license or higher.
- Full ARRL membership.
Responsibilities
- May serve as a general assistant to the Section Traffic Manager (STM) or as a specialist in a key function.
- Assists the STM with leadership responsibilities and may act as the STM’s alternate when needed.
- Takes over as STM in their absence or during emergency response operations to ensure continuous leadership when 24-hour activity requires multiple shifts.
- Works with the STM to establish, administer, and promote a traffic handling program at the section level, based on (but not limited to) National Traffic System (NTS) networks.
- At the Section Manager’s (SM) discretion, the ASTM may be designated as the recommended successor in the event the STM resigns or cannot complete their term.
- Should be familiar with the Official Appointment Description for the ARRL Section Traffic Manager, which outlines the fundamental STM responsibilities.
Recommended Training & Certification
- Encouraged to complete both ARRL Emergency Communications Courses:
- EC-001: Introduction to Emergency Communications
- EC-016: Public Service and Emergency Communications Management for Radio Amateurs
Recruitment & Membership Growth
- Recruiting new hams and ARRL members is a core responsibility of the ASTM.
- Should actively encourage participation in amateur radio and expand ARRL membership.
- Strengthening Field Organization programs enhances public service capabilities.
