Net Manager (NM) - Position Description
The Section Manager (SM) may appoint one or more Net Managers (NMs) to coordinate and supervise traffic handling activities within the section.
- Appointments are usually made based on recommendations from the Section Traffic Manager (STM).
- The number of NMs appointed depends on factors such as:
- Geographical size of the section.
- Number of nets operating in the section.
- Organizational needs of the section’s traffic system.
- A section may have one or multiple Net Managers, depending on the structure of the traffic handling network:
- Single NM for a single section net.
- Dedicated NMs for different modes:
- Phone nets.
- CW nets.
- VHF nets.
- RTTY nets.
- Packet nodes.
- Multi-section nets: If a net covers more than one section but operates at the NTS section level, the Net Manager is selected by agreement between the STMs involved, and the resident SM officially appoints the NM.
- Some NMs may also serve as system operators (sysops) or be recommended operators active on participating NTS packet boards.
Requirements
- Hold a Novice class license or higher.
- Maintain full ARRL membership.
Responsibilities
- Testing & Appointment Recommendations:
- Conduct any necessary testing of candidates for Official Relay Station (ORS) appointments before making recommendations to the STM.
- Traffic Handling Standards:
- Ensure that all traffic handled through an NTS net or node is in proper ARRL form.
- Recruitment & Membership Growth:
- Recruiting new hams and ARRL members is a core responsibility of every Net Manager.
- Actively promote Field Organization programs to expand public service capabilities.
