Official Relay Station (ORS) - Position Description

The Official Relay Station (ORS) is a traffic-handling appointment open to all classes of amateur radio licenses.

  • This appointment applies equally to all modes and all parts of the spectrum.
  • ORS operators handle message traffic, regardless of the mode employed (CW, phone, RTTY, ASCII, packet, etc.).
  • Skilled traffic handlers play a critical role in emergency communications, providing valuable public service during crises.

Role & Responsibilities

  • ORS operators enhance community readiness by ensuring their stations are capable of handling emergency traffic when needed.

  • Traffic handling expertise is a key indicator of a mature and proficient amateur radio operator.

  • Different modes have unique traffic handling procedures, but all ORS appointees must:

    • Follow standardized ARRL traffic handling procedures.
    • Set a high standard of excellence in their operations.
  • An ORS may choose to specialize in a single mode or operate across multiple modes and spectrum areas.

  • Versatility is not required, but those skilled in multiple modes can provide a more complete public service.


Requirements & Qualifications

  • Full ARRL membership.
  • Novice class license or higher.
  • Code and/or voice transmission capability.
  • High-quality transmissions in all operational aspects, including:
    • CW signals: Must be pure, chirpless, and clickless with well-spaced and properly formed code.
    • Voice transmissions: Must be properly modulated, clearly enunciated, and minimally distorted.
  • Strict adherence to ARRL operating practices, including:
    • Proper message formatting.
    • Standard ending signals.
    • Recognized abbreviations or prowords.
  • Regular participation in traffic handling activities, either independently or through ARRL-sponsored programs.
  • Must be capable of handling record communications speedily and reliably while setting the example for efficient operating procedures.
  • Report monthly to the Section Traffic Manager (STM), including:
    • A breakdown of traffic handled during the past calendar month.

Recruitment & Membership Growth

  • Recruiting new hams and ARRL members is a core responsibility of every ORS appointee.
  • ORS operators should actively promote participation in amateur radio and expand ARRL membership.
  • Strengthening Field Organization programs enhances public service capabilities.
